Chapter Six

But even the fiercest passion couldn’t keep the cold at bay for ever. The icy seawater eventually penetrated through to her bones, and Harriet started to shiver violently. Her trembling communicated itself to Philippe, and he drew back. Harriet could tell from the expression on his face that she wasn’t the only one who had forgotten she was drenched with salt water.

“I’m wet!” she stammered unnecessarily.

Alternately hot and cold, shivering and blushing at the same time, Harriet thought wryly that she must have just uttered the understatement of the year! Wet—drowned, more likely! Seawater had soaked through every stitch of clothing and was running in great rivulets down her body. It streamed from her clothes, her hair, in fact from every conceivable part of her, and was making a fairly large puddle in the dusty road.

“You will get pneumonia,” Philippe said abruptly, using his doctor’s voice. “Come on.”

With one swift movement, and before she had a chance to demur, he swung her up into his arms, carrying her as if she weighed no more than a feather. Striding past the taverna, he continued on towards a large villa set a little way from the sea. From the cradle of his arms, Harriet could see the villa was surrounded by tall, dark cypress trees. It was a huge building, and in the darkness the trees gave it an air of isolation. Surely that enormous house couldn’t be where he lived?

“Where are we going?” Harriet struggled ineffectually, trying to put her feet to the ground. “Put me down,” she insisted. “I can walk by myself.”

Philippe seemed not to notice her struggles and took not the slightest notice of what she’d said. “To my home,” he said briefly, as if she hadn’t spoken, and continued walking towards the villa.

“To your home! Oh, but I don’t think—”

“Stop thinking,” rapped the uncompromising reply, “because that is where we are going, and no arguments!”

Harriet’s heart changed gears and started thudding wildly out of control. To his home, with Philippe—alone! She’d already kissed him twice with what could only be described as wanton abandon. Much against my better judgment, she reminded herself quickly, if somewhat weakly! Now she knew she just had to say no. Now was not the time to be weak-willed again because, once inside and alone with Philippe, Harriet knew she couldn’t possibly answer for her actions; the attraction between them was too strong. It was now or never!

“Philippe,” she began, trying to keep her voice firm and determined, “you know that I’m engaged to Felix. So you know why I really shouldn’t have kissed you.”

For the moment, Harriet had decided, it would be more convenient to stay engaged to Felix. The thought that she loved another man should appeal to Philippe’s conscience!

“No, you really shouldn’t have,” he said euphemistically, his tone ringing with wry accusation. “If you were engaged to me, I’d wring your neck if you went around kissing other men!”

“But you kissed me first.” Harriet flared indignantly. Oh dear, perhaps it wasn’t such a good idea pretending to still be engaged.
